World of Darkness Revealed?

I’m a bit slow in reporting this, but Massively is reporting that this month’s Grand Masquerade may include something of a reveal of CCP’s in-development World of Darkness Online. For those who don’t know, the Grand Masquerade is White Wolf’s annual LARP event, held in New Orleans.

Let’s hope so. CCP has been keeping details of WoDO very close to the vest – even the name is speculation. It’s been long enough since it was informally announced that folks have started talking about it in terms of vaporware. So a least a little bit of info about it and where it is in its development is close to a year overdue.

The original post that spawned the rumor is HERE – read it for yourself; the key quote is definitely suggestive:

The big news that I can’t really give to many details on is that we’ve got something really big we want to show our fans first. Friday at sundown is where we give everyone the first look at the future of the World of Darkness. If you have been a fan of our games for two months or two decades you won’t want to miss what we have to say.

Even if it this big news turns out to be something other than WoDO, I still don’t buy the idea that WoDO is just loose talk. Frankly, CCP had zero reason to acquire White Wolf and retain the entire creative team if not for this project. But it’s past time for CCP to put this to bed and start telling us something, even if release is distant.

  1. The issue is too many irons in the fire simultaneously. Between Incarna for EVE, Dust 514 and eventually WoD, CCP has just a few too many projects on the go. It bit them on the ass this spring/summer when the Massively vocal EVE community called them on recently introduced asymmetrical lag in large fleet fights. As good as these guys are (and they are good, no one else is even attempting to do what they do), they are not as big as Blizzard (in fact they are just about exactly 1/10 the size).
