An Explanation of EVE Lag

The latest EVE Dev Blog has some interesting behind-the-scenes discussion on the recent megabattle in LXQ2-T and how such things actually play out at the server level. As someone not only interesting in MMOs but also going to school for (eventually) programming, I find these sorts of explanations fascinating.

The gist of it is that while we experience New Eden in what seems to be real time, instructions queue up on the server, and when large numbers of instructions are being given (i. e. when there’s 3200+ people fighting in Local,) that pile gets to be too big for the server to handle in a semblance of real time. Thus lag.
